Getting the best from the best products
The Design Services Department operates from our head office at Cheadle in Cheshire. Headed by the Technical Manager - brickwork & paving, the professional team has many years experience in masonry detailing.
The Department deals with a range of technical enquiries from basic individual brick properties through to advice on complex construction details.
In addition to providing technical input to many of the company's publications, the Department has taken a leading role in the development of innovative systems including 37 Degree Plinths and Arch Sets, and has also contributed to a series of authoritative Guidance Notes and the technical information.
By liaising closely with both the central Customer Services Centres and and factories, the Design Services Department are able to fulfil an important customer support role in product enquiries and the processing of orders for special shaped bricks.
The Department utilises AutoCad software to provide 3D modelling for special shaped brick manufacture, and to assist in detailing customer requirements.

The team’s advice covers not only bricks but also appropriate use of mortar, damp-proof courses and ancillary components, and response to movement joint enquiries.
Many projects incorporate special shaped bricks to provide a functional and more pleasing appearance and our Design team has extensive knowledge of both British Standard 4729:1990 and the requirements for purpose-made special shapes.
Customers, including national housebuilders, have benefited from detailing developed by the Design team, including special shapes created in CAD format.
Special Shapes & CAD
British Standard 4729:1990 contains a wide range of special shaped units arranged in groups by basic description. With 235 variations included, traditional details can be achieved, but modifications to basic dimensions, angles and facing requirements of specials are often required to create particular detailing.
The Design Services Department offers free advice on detailing with our special shaped bricks, often involving preparation of drawings and, with AutoCad software, the team can create both 2D and 3D drawn images for discussion with customers.
The Department works closely with many major builders and developers to create details with a range of appropriate specials. Close scheduling allows cost-efficient delivery of specials to individual plots in complete packages, and ultimately provides a pleasing design solution.
