Buildings using clay roofing tiles are part of our country’s heritage; Wienerberger respects these traditions and produces high quality products which provide designers with products that can work in harmony with the local environment.   However clay roofing tiles are not just about the past; modern manufacturing techniques allow for tile profiles to be made which offer architects contemporary design with proven performance.

Whether you are building your own dream home, or you are designing a house for others, the choice of clay as the roofing material is one that gives flexibility of form and ensures that the property will gain maximum kerb appeal and the pride of its owners.   The use of clay roofing tiles provides a wealth of colour choices and textures which look good on the day that they are laid but also improve their looks as they weather to produce a warmth and depth of character. This is apparent from the large stock of historic buildings with original clay roofing tiles that exist today, still performing their function with an elegant appearance.   The benefits of the use of clay for roofing tiles which produces this longevity are due to the nature of fired clay.  Clay roofing tiles do not fade over time as the colour is an integral part of the tile and is not ‘bleached’ by the sun or is not leached away by the rain. Other characteristics of the material are fire and chemical resistance, also clay roofing tiles do not harbour organic growth to the degree with which it attaches itself to other types of roofing materials.   The Koramic range of clay roofing tiles are produced in modern quality assured factories, this combined with over 120 years of production experience ensures that our customers have products that will create roofs of unsurpassable beauty.

Complementing the Local Area

Clay roofing tiles were introduced into the UK by the Romans, however it was during the 13th century that there use really caught on to replace the popular but highly flammable thatch. Clay roofing tiles have also been imported into the UK for centuries particularly on the Eastern areas of the country where the ships bringing British wool back to the continent for weaving would use clay roofing tiles as ballast for the outward journey which would be sold to local builders.

Therefore large parts of Britain enjoy many examples of clay roofs which enrich the regional landscape. Koramic clay roofing tiles are available in profiles and colours which complement local tastes so that new properties do not jar with the built and natural environment of the area. Our range includes products manufactured with finishes that have a pre-aged appearance that is ideal for producing a traditional looking new building, or for blending in with existing materials on refurbishment projects.

Clay is one of the earliest building materials in the history of man. People have been firing this abundant material for more than 5,000 years to make their roofs more attractive and more comfortable. It is a material that is becoming even more relevant at a time when people are looking for healthier and more environmentally friendly solutions for their homes.   As a natural product, clay roof tiles are environmentally friendly by definition. Clay is a natural material with a long life expectancy and practicality. Once they have reached the end of their life, clay roof tiles are harmless to the environment and can be recycled for new applications. In close collaboration with local authorities, Koramic takes great care in re-developing its clay pits, letting them evolve into natural reserves and habitats for endangered birds, animals and plants, or other landscape solutions.
