Wienerberger supports community campaign to build miners’ memorial
The Kingsbury factory has supplied ‘smooth red’ and ‘smooth blue’ bricks to construct the wall, which is dedicated to the miners who worked at the Kingsbury and Dexter collieries. Wienerberger has also organised for some of the bricks to be individually engraved with the names of the people who worked at the collieries.
Paul Hodgkinson, regional associate sales director for Wienerberger, said: “Our factory was formerly known as the Whateley Brick Company, which made the bricks to build the miners’ houses. We’re delighted to have been involved in a project which is closely linked to our own history and means so much to the local community. We’re proud to have played a part in developing the memorial and look forward to seeing it take pride of place in the village.”
Organised by the Piccadilly Mining Heritage Group, the memorial is prominently displayed at the entrance to Piccadilly. It includes a bronze replica of a miner’s lamp which has been lit to commemorate miners who died working down the mines.
Local MP, Mike O’Brien, who has backed the project, added: “The memorial is a tremendous site and fitting tribute to the men, women and children who went down the pit to keep the power stations supplied with coal and the lights on.”
