Case Study

South Thames College

Discover how Wienerberger and Taylor Maxwell helped realise the vision for this urban redevelopment project with Corium brick tile cladding.

Designed by award-winning architects, Boon Brown, the South Thames College project is one of the largest urban renewal projects in London in recent years, breathing new life into Wandsworth town centre and providing locals a place to live, work and study.

Developed for London & Quadrant Housing Group (L&Q), this £70 million project includes residential apartments, commercial office space, a basement carpark, library, and a newly enhanced green space on the Old Burial Ground in Garratt Lane. Part of the wider Wandsworth Exchange regeneration scheme, the South Thames College project strives to offer new homes to individuals and families from a wide range of household incomes.

The development offers 201 one, two and three-bedroom homes including 21 shared ownership apartments. A quarter of the 200 new homes have been offered to eligible local residents to rent or buy at a discounted rate, so that the project can help the existing community of Wandsworth flourish.

L&Q purchased the land from South Thames College and Wandsworth Council, with the vision of providing new homes in a central London location, an improved public library, and to help fund refurbished teaching facilities at South Thames College.

When it came to finding a facade system for the project’s buildings, which range from between six and 26 storeys, safety was paramount to the client. L&Q specified that a non-combustible system with an A2 fire rating or higher must be used. The project needed a facade solution that offered excellent safety credentials without compromising the aesthetic qualities of the town centre regeneration.

"To create the project’s distinctive look, two different brick tile shades were selected

– predominantly grey but with red brick elements."

Taylor Maxwell provided the Corium brick cladding system, manufactured by Wienerberger, for the South Thames College project. Corium was chosen primarily for its safety credentials, offering an A1 fire rating and full BBA accreditation.

To create the project’s distinctive look, two different brick tile shades were selected – predominantly grey but with red brick elements. Over 13,000 Corium brick tiles were carefully developed to match the colours that had been agreed with local planners, before being mechanically fixed into stainless steel rails on site. Century Facades Ltd were appointed to carry out the design, supply and installation package of the Corium brick tile cladding system.

Because Wienerberger can offer a wide range of standard colours, as well as custom-mixed, bespoke blends, Corium brick tiles were ideal for meeting the aesthetic parameters laid out by planners and the client, while also offering outstanding safety performance.
