wienerberger is thrilled to have been a sponsor of RIBA Stirling Stories: North 2024, a landmark event that brought together over 200 architects from Leeds and beyond to celebrate architectural excellence. This year’s even highlighted the power of architecture to drive positive change and shape our built environment.
The event featured a line-up of shortlisted projects competing for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize, showcasing the best new buildings in the UK. Attendees were also treated to keynote address by RIBA President Muyiwa Oki, who challenged architects to become “Agents of change” by focusing on decarbonisation, humanisation, and innovation.
Before and after the event, members of the wienerberger team had the chance to connect with architects of all experience levels, fostering discussions about our approach to designing and building sustainable building solutions. We discussed innovations such as Eco-brick and Porotherm Cavity Blocks, while also celebrating the continued relevance of traditional bricks and building materials.
Here’s a quick glimpse of the shortlisted projects that stole the show:
Chowdhury Walk, Al-Jawad Pike: A stunning example of social housing done right, achieving a beautiful balance between a traditional brick façade, modern design, and sensitivity to the local community.
The Elizabeth Line, Grimshaw, Maynard, Equation AtkinsRéalis: This massive project redefines the concept of a transportation hub, showcasing thoughtful design and a commitment to long-term positive impact.
King's Cross Masterplan, Allies and Morrison and Porphyrios Associates: This space is a testament to the power of "in-between" areas. King's Cross exemplifies the creation of vibrant social spaces within bustling urban environments.
National Portrait Gallery, Jamie Fobert Architects and Purcell: The National Portrait Gallery renovation is a masterclass in clever reuse of existing spaces.
Park Hill Phase Two, Mikhail Riches: This Sheffield project is a shining example of successful regeneration. Park Hill Phase Two demonstrates the incredible potential for updating existing structures, creating new life while preserving the past.
Wrexall Yard, Clementine Blakemore Architects: This one really tugs at the heartstrings. Wrexall Yard showcases the beauty of circularity by transforming old barns into sustainable holiday accommodation, designed specifically for accessibility.
It has since been announced that The Elizabeth Line has been awarded the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. Speaking on behalf of the prize jury, Muyiwa Oki, Riba President and Jury Chair, said “The Elizabeth Line is a triumph in architect-led collaboration, offering a flawless, efficient, beautifully choregraphed solution to inner-city transport.” This recognition underscores the importance of thoughtful design and positive impact that architecture can have on our daily lives.
wienerberger is committed to supporting sustainable building practices and promoting a sustainable future. We’re proud to contribute to a broader conversation about the role of architecture in addressing climate change and creating healthier, more resilient communities.
