Constructive Thinking - Day-to-Day Business

What impact has the lockdown had on day-to-day business?

Nearly every business has faced up to new challenges over the past few months, and we’re no different. We’ve been taking a look at how we all work - from individuals and internal teams, right through to customers and suppliers. The future of the construction industry has been a big focus too, because although no one is sure what the next months and years will bring, we need to plan for recovery in the short and medium term, and prosperity in the long term.

That’s where this new blog series comes in. We’re calling it Constructive Thinking, and it’s the result of some enlightening and insightful conversations with everyone from our own staff, to partners and associates throughout the supply chain. We want their thoughts on, and answers to, some of the most pertinent industry questions.

Today we’re asking... ‘What impact has the lockdown had on day-to-day business?’

Christine Leadbeater, Sales Manager, Keymer and Heritage

‘I work on the heritage side and primarily focus on specification, so most of the people I work with are architects, planners, National Trust, or homeowners themselves.

Most of those people are actually still working - so those of us at Wienerberger who are also still working are finding it really important to keep in contact with these people, to help solve their problems and answer their questions.

I see myself working from home for the rest of the year. If I can successfully find working methods, I perhaps don’t see a need to jump in my car and travel to meetings. I can successfully do it from home.’

Robert Blaikie, Scott Group

We’re now starting to see a gradual return to what would be considered a normal level of work.

I guess we’ll know in a few weeks what the ‘new normal’ actually means in terms of working practices and productivity.’

Rob Robinson, EH Smith

‘One thing I’m thankful for is, from a business point of view, is that my company is still operational.

We’re still working, we’re still paying employees and furloughed staff. That’s key in these concerning times.’

Adrian Shelley, Henshaws Roof and Build

‘It’s almost normal now to trade like this. I think we’ll be doing it for several weeks, until the advice changes.

It’s tough, it’s slow, but we’re getting there. Hopefully, the situation will change fairly soon and we can all come out of this together. In the meantime, we hope people keep adhering to the guidelines when they visit our premises, and anywhere else.

Paul Hodgkinson, Director of Business Development

‘I’ve been working throughout the lockdown period. Initially, it was quite quiet, and the majority of those contacting us were smaller businesses and the self-employed, such as architects and specifiers.

But we are now starting to see the bigger companies come back, presumably as more staff return to work. We’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by the level of enquiries and, considering the circumstances, it’s a fair bit higher than we might have expected a few weeks ago.’
