Restoring Chiddingfold Forge – A Community-Led Heritage Project

Donating Keymer hand-made paver products to help restore a heritage forge in Surrey.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), in collaboration with local residents, specialists, and trusted manufacturers, is leading the restoration of Chiddingfold Forge—one of the UK’s last intact village green smithies. Built circa 1812 on the site of the former Market House, this Grade II-listed structure stands as a significant piece of Surrey’s rural heritage.

Given to SPAB in 1938, the forge has remained at the heart of Chiddingfold’s cultural fabric. In 2009, local residents formed the Chiddingfold Conservation Trust to raise funds and deliver key improvements including roof repairs and utility connections. Today, with SPAB’s oversight, the building is being carefully modernised to ensure it is preserved and able to stand for years to come.

A standout feature of the current phase is the use of traditional, high-quality materials. The forge’s roof has been restored using hand-made Keymer tiles, produced in Ewhurst, Surrey. Now owned by wienerberger —Britain’s leading supplier of wall, roof, and landscaping solutions—Keymer combines heritage skills with modern efficiencies. The team continues to use the same clay, methods, and craftsmanship honed over centuries, while investing in sustainable production techniques. This approach ensures each tile delivers on authenticity whilst still delivering the performance required for both restoration and prestige new-build projects.

Supporting the floor refurbishment, wienerberger donated some of their Red Blend Baggeridge pavers, selected for their durability and visual harmony with the site. Product donations like these play a vital role in delivering our Social Impact Strategy, enabling us to support communities while showcasing the value and quality of our materials.

Looking ahead, the forge is preparing for a new chapter in its working life. Following the retirement of the last resident blacksmith in 2023, SPAB is negotiating a lease with Henry Rogers, an award-winning craftsman from Hot Iron Blacksmithing. Once confirmed, Henry will re-establish his forge within the building, bringing traditional skills back to the heart of the community while expanding his enterprise.

This project exemplifies the power of collaboration and craftsmanship. With its blend of heritage, community engagement, and quality materials —the Chiddingfold Forge restoration is more than a building project. It is a living legacy, ensuring the forge remains a vital, working landmark for future generations.
