East Riding of Yorkshire Council Energy Efficiency Retrofit Programme

The objective was to future-proof the homes by improving energy performance, reducing emissions and lowering tenant energy bills, all while delivering a durable, attractive scheme. 

Partnering with Sandtoft wienerberger, East Riding chose to install a complete roof system including battens, clips, tiles (Double Pantile Rustic), fittings and accessories, which consequently qualified them for the wienerberger design guarantee ‘RoofSpec’ offering 15 years of performance assurance and a single point of accountability for the entire system. Midway through, the specification was extended to incorporate solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Thanks to strong collaboration and effective planning, the additional works were delivered without delays or cost impact. 

Geo Houlton and Sons Ltd delivered the roofing and PV installation as one coordinated package. This helped avoid trade overlap, improved safety at height and kept the programme on track despite challenging weather conditions. The compact size and lighter weight of the PV panels (just 8.95kg each) made handling safer and faster.

Once roofing was complete, a specialist electrical contractor handled the internal system connections in line with regulatory requirements. This was managed with clear, respectful communication with residents, ensuring access was arranged with minimal fuss.

The project was delivered on time and within the original budget, even with the addition of solar PV. Effective procurement and the use of experienced, manufacturer-trained installers helped avoid delays and costly rework. Tenants expressed satisfaction not just with the process, but with the results.
