To meet the demands of the project, a complete roof replacement was carried out using a combination of high-performance and visually cohesive products.

As part of its commitment to improving energy efficiency, Jigsaw Homes initiated a large-scale roofing retrofit project, with the objective of reducing fuel poverty, enhancing aesthetic appeal, and meeting long-term sustainability goals—all while remaining compliant with regulatory standards and within budget.

The Sandtoft in-roof solar PV system was chosen for its streamlined, flush-fit design and fast installation. It integrated seamlessly with the Danum TLE tiles, offering both high energy performance and a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.

A major contributor to the decision-making was wienerberger’s RoofSpec+ 15-year guarantee, which gave all stakeholders peace of mind regarding long-term performance and compliance. The PV system's ability to meet Part L of the Building Regulations, EPC C targets, and key UK government energy targets made it an ideal solution for a retrofit of this nature.

While some existing soffits and fascias were retained due to good condition, new Floplast rainwater goods were installed to enhance functionality and complement the refreshed roofline. In total, 1,149 PV panels were installed at Calder Avenue and 768 at Mayfield Garden, resulting in a high-impact transformation that will benefit residents for years to come.

The roofing works were carried out by DLP Services in close collaboration with wienerberger and SIG Roofing. All roofs were stripped and replaced in accordance with the RoofSpec+ design guidance, which included custom batten layouts, fixing schedules, and wind load calculations.

Installation began with the placement of lower flashings and sealing strips to ensure waterproofing. Pre-marked battens were used for alignment, and the solar panels were slotted into mounting trays and secured using approved clamps. At just 8.95kg per panel, the lightweight modules were installed in under a minute, significantly speeding up the programme and reducing labour costs.

Electrical connections used waterproof MC4 connectors, with cabling carefully routed for safety and longevity. Once installed, the system was tested and signed off in line with RoofSpec+ standards to validate the 15-year guarantee.

The Calder Avenue retrofit was completed on schedule between March and May 2025 and delivered within budget. The integrated design approach enabled faster installation, reduced waste, and ensured full compliance with regulatory and sustainability standards.

Resident and client feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The homes not only look significantly improved but will deliver long-term energy savings for tenants.
