At wienerberger, health and safety is not just a policy—it is a fundamental business priority and a core part of who we are. We are committed to the absolute safety, health, and holistic wellbeing of every single person working across our operations. Our ultimate mission is to ensure everyone returns home safely, healthy, and well at the end of every working day.

Our business deploys and maintains a comprehensive health and safety management system. Building on this robust framework, we focus substantial efforts on machinery functionality and process integrity so our people can perform their duties in a fundamentally secure environment. Safety protocols and behaviours are reviewed daily on the ground through our Visible Management Leadership (VML) programme, making health and safety a proactive, living practice led by our management teams.

Empowering every voice: Psychological safety & the 'Near Miss / Safety Concern' Initiative

True physical safety is impossible without robust mental and emotional reassurance. Through our dedicated Psychological Safety Initiative, we cultivate an open, supportive culture where every colleague is empowered and encouraged to speak up, share ideas, and voice safety concerns or improvements without fear.

This climate of trust drives our long-standing 'Near Miss' initiative, launched in early 2014. Because our people feel safe to speak up, we successfully report and action an average of 9,000 safety concerns each year which are raised by our colleagues. Listening to these frontline insights has played a vital part in preventing injuries and remains a key enabler towards our ultimate goal of 'Zero Harm'.

A holistic approach: Health, mental health & wellbeing frameworks

We look after the whole person. To support our teams both inside and outside of the workplace, we have established robust physical and mental wellbeing frameworks:

Annual Health Assessments: We provide proactive health screenings to help our people track, understand, and manage their physical health, ensuring early intervention and long-term vitality.

Mental Health First Aiders: We have built a dedicated network of trained Mental Health First Aiders across our sites. These colleagues offer a confidential, friendly, and immediate point of contact for anyone experiencing mental health challenges or emotional distress.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP): Every team member has access to a comprehensive EAP. This provides round-the-clock, confidential professional support, counselling, and resources to help navigate life's personal or professional challenges.

Occupational road risk

Our commitment to safety extends far beyond our physical sites and onto the roads we share with our communities. As part of our proactive "Safe Driving" campaign, we actively monitor driving patterns to identify where additional support and training can make a difference. Employees driving on behalf of Wienerberger undergo advanced defensive driving courses, equipping them with the vital skills needed to protect themselves and fellow road users. We believe that true safety means ensuring everyone returns home safely, every single day.

Industry-Leading Benchmarks & Collaboration

We actively collaborate to champion occupational safety throughout our entire sector. wienerberger works alongside fellow manufacturers in partnership with Ceramics UK and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under the 'Health and Safety Pledge'.

Our progressive approach to safeguarding our people is consistently recognized at the annual Pledge Conference. In 2023, wienerberger received a record-breaking 30 awards. Crucially, 16 of these awards were presented directly to individuals within our business who demonstrated outstanding commitment to health and safety, alongside a Highly Commended Award given for our progressive approach to Safety Culture and Behavioural Safety.
