Dheeraj Satheesh, Renewables Design Engineer at Pipelife, Ireland, shares insights into his role in the Underfloor Heating Department and their work across building services and renewable energy systems.
Dheeraj’s career in the renewables sector began with a strong interest in practical engineering solutions. Fascinated by how energy systems work, he was eager to explore ways to improve both efficiency and comfort in modern construction.
He started his journey into the construction industry with preparing bills of quantities, where he developed strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of project requirements. In 2024, he joined Pipelife, a part of the wienerberger UK & Ireland business, which manufactures advanced piping systems that support infrastructure, buildings and communities across Europe.
“From the beginning, I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that have challenged me professionally and allowed me to expand my technical knowledge within the renewable energy sector. So, joining Pipelife gave me the opportunity to better understand the importance of quality systems and the role they play in sustainable building design.
As a Renewables Design Engineer, my day-to-day work involves designing and optimizing renewable energy systems, ensuring they are compliant with industry standards. I also review project requirements, create and update technical drawings and specifications, carry out performance calculations, and support projects from concept through to implementation.
I work closely with suppliers, contractors, installation and project teams to develop efficient and reliable heating designs tailored to each application. The role involves balancing technical performance, sustainability, and practical installation requirements to deliver systems that meet modern building standards and energy expectations. Underfloor heating has become an important part of that transition, offering efficient heat distribution and compatibility with renewable technologies such as heat pumps.”
When it comes to developing new designs, Dheeraj’s approach is focused on continuous improvement, finding ways to create solutions that perform better than those produced before.
“When developing a new design, I start by looking at what could be improved from the existing solution. I consider factors such as performance, efficiency, reliability, installation, maintenance, cost and customer feedback. Reviewing what has worked well, as well as any past challenges, helps shape the objectives for the new design. A key part of my role is finding ways to enhance system performance while ensuring safety, quality and cost-effectiveness. I also review components and designs to make sure they meet customer expectations and regulatory standards.”
Dheeraj describes his time at Pipelife as highly rewarding, with several factors contributing to his personal and professional growth.
“My time at Pipelife has been very positive in terms of professional development and being part of a team that is committed to quality and innovation. One of the aspects I've enjoyed most is the collaborative culture. Working alongside experienced colleagues from different departments has provided valuable learning opportunities and helped me develop a broader understanding of how our products and solutions support customers. The organisation’s focus on innovation and continuous improvement also creates an environment where new ideas are encouraged and where we are constantly looking for ways to enhance our products and processes.”
Like many roles, renewable energy design comes with its challenges. However, Dheeraj strives to balance competing priorities to deliver the best outcomes for both customers and the business.
“One of the biggest challenges in renewable energy design is balancing multiple competing requirements. A design may need to maximise performance and efficiency while also meeting budget constraints, complying with regulations, maintaining ease of installation and ensuring long-term reliability. Finding the right balance between these factors often requires careful analysis and informed decision-making.
To overcome these challenges, we focus on gathering accurate data, assessing multiple design options, consulting with colleagues and subject matter experts, and validating solutions through calculations, simulations and testing. Strong communication and collaboration are equally important, as they help identify potential issues early and ensure the final design delivers the best possible outcome for both the business and the customer.”
Reflecting on the impact of his work, Dheeraj says the most rewarding part of his role is knowing that the systems he helps design support customers for years to come.
“What makes me most proud is seeing the long-term impact my work has on our customers and the success of their projects. Renewable energy systems are significant investments, and it’s important that they perform efficiently and reliably for years to come. Our designs not only help customers achieve their goals but also contribute to a more sustainable future. When people can depend on the quality, performance and reliability of the systems we create, it reflects the effort, expertise and commitment that goes into every project.”
Looking ahead, Dheeraj continues to develop efficient and reliable heating designs for our customers and is excited about the future of renewable heating.
“I am excited to continue developing innovative heating solutions and supporting the move towards more sustainable building practices across Ireland. Being part of an industry that is constantly evolving keeps the work both challenging and rewarding, and I look forward to contributing further to the future of renewable heating design.”
