Shaping Tomorrow's Architects: wienerberger funded bursaries making an impact

Published 16/05/25

Investing in the next generation of architects means investing in the future of our cities and communities. With the built environment playing a critical role in addressing challenges like climate change, housing shortages, and urban planning, the support for emerging architectural talent has never been more vital. That’s why for the second consecutive year, wienerberger has partnered with the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) at Manchester Metropolitan University to philanthropically fund a bursary programme that exemplifies commitment to the future of sustainable and innovative design.

Cultivating Skills for Success

The RIBA Part 3 Bursary Programme is designed to support students completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Architecture and Contemporary Practice (RIBA Part 3). This programme is a defining step toward professional qualification for architects in the UK, requiring rigorous academic and practical engagement. wienerberger's initiative offers a bursary of £1,000 to selected students, alleviating financial burdens and allowing them to focus more fully on their studies and professional development.

For the 2024/25 academic year, six exceptional students were chosen to receive this bursary, continuing the programme’s success following its initial launch for the 2023/24 cohort. The bursary selects candidates based on three key criteria: those facing significant or unexpected financial hardships, individuals who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and early career success, and applicants with a keen passion for sustainable and innovative brick construction.

Rachel Newton, Programme Leader commented, "Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to nurturing talent and providing opportunities for students from all backgrounds to excel. By creating an inclusive and supportive environment, the University ensures that every student has access to resources and opportunities that help them reach their full potential. Your support helps us to break down barriers to education and empower outstanding individuals to thrive."

Real Impact on Students' Lives

These testimonials from students who have benefited from wienerberger’s support illustrate the tangible impact of this initiative.

“Your support isn’t just a boost; it’s a powerful encouragement to keep thinking boldly and working towards a more responsible and resilient future for architecture. It’s a meaningful reminder that my efforts to push for sustainability in architecture are being recognised and valued. This opportunity will help me continue building on the changes I’ve already started, for example, introducing lifecycle analysis into our projects at Bond Bryan Architects, while also growing my expertise and, hopefully, making an even greater impact in the realm of sustainable design” - Callum

“Receiving this bursary will support my studies throughout the academic year alongside my employment. It gives me more time to conduct research for my case study and to undertake mentorship.” Soniamaria

“As an international candidate, pursuing the Part 3 Programme at the Manchester School of Architecture presents both incredible opportunities and significant financial challenges. Without access to local government funding or student loans, your support is essential to my ability to engage more deeply with my studies and to succeed.

Driven by a strong passion for community, I believe adapting the wheel of architecture for a more sustainable future is of utmost importance. Being an ARB-registered architect is not just a title; it represents a continuous commitment to protecting the scope of our work, the people we affect through the built environment, and its spirit. Having experienced the application of wienerberger products throughout my education and career, I feel extremely proud to be recognised by this bursary.” - Uka
