Anderwood Homes

Case study

Eco-Brick

Anderwood Homes are a small housebuilder located on the south coast of England specialising in developing sustainable, high-quality homes. In Sway, Lymington, Anderwood have delivered three high-quality bungalows using a combination of traditional construction methods and innovative, future-focused building products.

Designed to achieve strong energy performance while maintaining build quality and durability, the project showcases the benefits of the Eco-brick system, alongside a complete external envelope solution including Sandtoft 20/20 roof tiles, dry ridge system, in-roof solar system, and FloPlast water goods, to achieve an excellent EPC A rating.

This development is a strong example of how sustainability, thermal efficiency, and buildability can come together without compromising on the aesthetics or long-term performance UK homeowners expect.

Project overview

Located on the outskirts of the New Forest in Hampshire, this niche development consists of three bungalows built using traditional construction methods, including timber cut roofs and cavity walls, while meeting modern expectations for energy efficiency and sustainability.

“A key focus of the project was to deliver three quality homes using quality materials and traditional methods, while also achieving excellent energy performance” Steve Tyrell | Anderwood Homes

The challenge

Anderwood Homes wanted to create homes that were:

  • Built traditionally, using proven methods and durable materials
  • Energy efficient, achieving strong EPC performance
  • Future-ready, aligned with modern sustainability expectations
  • High quality in finish, inside and out

“As energy costs continue to rise, improving thermal performance and reducing ongoing running costs was a priority - not just for us, but for the long-term benefit of the homeowners.” Steve Tyrell | Anderwood Homes

The solution

To meet the goals of the project, Anderwood Homes worked closely with wienerberger to specify a range of products that supported build quality, energy performance and sustainability.

Key products used on the project:

Why UK Eco-brick?

A standout feature of this project was the use of Eco-brick. Eco-brick is significantly slimmer than a standard brick, allowing developers to increase insulation in the cavity (or potentially internal space), while maintaining a traditional external brick finish.

As highlighted on the project, Eco-brick offers:

  • Up to 31% reduction in upfront embodied carbon per m² of brickwork
  • A slimmer brick profile, enabling improved thermal efficiency
  • The ability to retain a residual cavity, helping ensure materials are not touching and moisture management is maintained.

Supporting energy efficiency with in-roof solar

To help future-proof the homes and support reduced running costs for residents, the development also incorporated Sandtoft in-roof solar panels, neatly integrated into the roofline.

This helped Anderwood Homes align the build with current and future energy requirements, supporting compliance and forward planning for upcoming standards.

A collaborative approach with wienerberger

A strong working relationship between Anderwood Homes and wienerberger contributed to a smooth project experience, helping to keep delivery and site support aligned with the build programme.

“The collaboration with wienerberger was really, really easy… the support, the delivery, everything was on time, so it really did help us on the ground with our programme.” - Steve Tyrell | Anderwood Homes

Having worked together on previous developments, the teams were able to coordinate efficiently and navigate challenges quickly, ensuring the build stayed on track.

The Outcome

The completed development delivers three well-finished bungalows that combine:

  • Traditional build quality
  • Strong energy performance (EPC A)
  • Reduced upfront embodied carbon, supported by Eco-brick
  • Improved thermal efficiency through increased cavity insulation potential
  • Lower running costs supported by in-roof solar technology

"The final result is a development that not only looks high quality but provides real, tangible benefits for the people who will live there, especially during colder months when heating demand and energy bills increase." - Steve Tyrell | Anderwood Homes

Quality workmanship and a strong finish

With multiple wienerberger solutions used across the external envelope, the project achieves a cohesive finish and a strong overall aesthetic.

“It just gives a nice feel to the neighbourhood and a really good finish to all three bungalows.” - Barrie Mathew
