Supporting local wildlife at Sandtoft
Discover how a wildlife meadow at wienerberger's Sandtoft factory has become a thriving habitat for wildlife.
As part of wienerberger’s Sandtoft site's Biodiversity Enhancement Management Plan (BEMP), a project was undertaken to plant a wildflower meadow. This initiative was designed to support local wildlife, particularly pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while also enhancing the outdoor environment for employees.
The primary goal of this project was to create a thriving natural habitat that would attract birds and insects, contributing to local biodiversity. At the same time, the meadow was intended to provide a pleasant and relaxing outdoor space for employees, promoting well-being and a connection with nature.
By incorporating native wildflower species, the project aimed to support long-term ecological sustainability and align with wienerberger’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship.
To bring this vision to life, over 150 native plug plants were carefully selected and planted, complemented by the sowing of wildflower seeds. The species chosen included plants chosen not only for their ability to attract wildlife but also for their resilience and adaptability to the local environment.
The wildflower meadow has already begun to yield positive results. The increase in pollinator activity has been evident, with more bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects observed in the area. This supports the broader ecosystem by facilitating pollination and strengthening local biodiversity.
