Building biodiversity partnerships and sharing our data

Biodiversity loss and climate change are shaping the future of the places we live and how we build. Partnerships are essential to promote biodiversity, and the data we share is used by others to inform broader conversation programmes. This is part of how we’re building for what’s next, working collaboratively to protect the natural systems that our communities depend on.

Our approach to forming partnerships and sharing data

At wienerberger UK & Ireland, we are partnering with other organisations to combine different skills, experience, and assets to solve complex problems and maximise the positive impact our biodiversity strategy will have. Our partnerships span science, product innovation, education, and advocacy.

As part of our commitments to survey and monitor and survey biodiversity on our sites we collect habitat and species data. By sharing our data and information with others wienerberger can assist other conservation initiatives, helping to close knowledge gaps on species abundance and habitat condition.

Partnerships in action

Chester Zoo

Together with Chester Zoo, we’re helping to protect some of the UK’s most important, and often overlooked, species.

Through a multi‑year partnership, we are:

  • Providing £50,000 of funding over five years to support conservation of native invertebrates. These species play a vital role in pollination and ecosystem health, making this work critical to wider biodiversity resilience.
  • Donating materials, including 600+ tonnes of sandstone, to support habitat creation.
  • Supplying Eco-habitat products such as bird and bat boxes for major conservation developments at Chester Zoo.
  • Volunteering our time to support the Chester Zoo team with animal care and biodiversity recording and monitoring.

Digger at Broomfleet Factory restoring quarry lagoons

    RSPB at Broomfleet

At our Broomfleet tileworks in East Yorkshire, we work with the RSPB to restore quarry lagoons into thriving wetland habitats for protected bird species.

The site is being restored into wetland and coastal bird habitat, with a focus on reed bed, tree and hedgerow planting, and increasing structural diversity across the landscape. These habitats provide nesting and perching sites, shelter, and vital feeding opportunities for birds.

Although Broomfleet is an inland wetland, it sits within the wider East Atlantic Flyway - a major migration route stretching from the Arctic to South Africa. Wetlands along this route act as critical stopover points where birds can rest and refuel during their journeys. By restoring habitats at Broomfleet, we’re supporting not just local biodiversity, but a migration system that spans continents.

    Oyster Heaven

Oyster Heaven and Wienerberger Netherlands jointly developed a patented clay block: the Mother Reef. The goal is large-scale production of substrates for oyster reef restoration, an important step towards accelerating the large-scale restoration of oyster reef ecosystems. Wienerberger produces the Mother Reef blocks in the Netherlands for use in conversation projects across Europe.

These clay blocks have been used in the Luna Oyster Project, a collaboration between Oyster Heaven and Norfolk Seaweed, to restore 4 million oysters off the Norfolk coast.

Oyster reefs are essential for healthy marine ecosystems: they contribute to water filtering, biodiversity and coastal protection. A great example, demonstrating how we work on solutions that contribute to climate resilience and biodiversity, even outside the built environment.

    Sharing data

Our biodiversity data is reliable and consistently curated, it is stored in accessible repositories for our people and is shared with relevant Record Centres for the benefit of our partners and our communities.

We digitise our ecological records, including land cover, habitat data and species records. Our Biodiversity Enhancement Management Plans are mapped in GIS and presented to our people in formats that are easy to access and use for decision making.

Supporting Wildlife Trusts across local communities

We also work alongside local Wildlife Trusts in the communities connected to our sites, supporting habitat restoration, conservation projects, and awareness initiatives.

Through these partnerships, we contribute to a wider network of conservation activity—helping to protect and restore nature at scale.

    Partner with us

We’re always looking to collaborate with organisations and stakeholders who share our ambition for healthier ecosystems and a more resilient built environment.
