Top 5 garden trends for spring and summer

Jo Roberts, Landscape Category Manager at Wienerberger, offers her expertise on the top five garden trends for this year and how you can make the most of them.

As we’re all spending more time at home recently, we’re looking over our homes and gardens and noticing areas that could use a little TLC. With the warmer weather upon us, attentions are naturally turning to the outdoors. What can be done to make the space work for our households right now, as well as making our gardens welcoming for when we can once again invite our friends and extended family over to enjoy time together outside in the sun?

There are a number of things that can be done to spruce up your garden either now or when things return to normality. Whether that means a whole renovation of your patio area, creating your very own vegetable patch, or simply planting some new bulbs, transforming your outdoor space can bring a multitude of benefits, not just for you, but for your guests, and local wildlife.

Here at Wienerberger, our category team is always on the lookout for new gardening ideas to ensure that our products are in keeping with the trends for the year ahead.

1. Growing your own

Create your own personal vegetable patch with organic veggies that are free from chemicals and pesticides and packed full of vitamins and minerals; offering a multitude of health benefits. Growing your own also saves pennies in your monthly shop. Most importantly, it’s much easier than you think. Start small. Vegetables such as peas, radish, kale and lettuce are all easy to maintain and thrive in the cool soil of early spring. If you’re feeling brave, go one step further and use garden waste to make your own compost. It’s an inexpensive, natural process that transforms garden waste into valuable nutrients that your plants will love. What’s more, it can be implemented in both large and small-scale gardens, so anybody can try it. Just don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty!

2. Wildlife friendly

Another way to create a more exciting green space is by considering your local wildlife. Switch to natural methods of pest control and take steps towards supporting your local pollinators. Add some bird feeders to your trees. If you’re planning to install a new annex or outdoor wall, why not add one of our eco-habitat bat boxes? Invest in building a pond! (Should you be lucky enough to have the space). A recent study shows that more than one in seven UK species are facing extinction, and more than half are in decline[1] – we’re losing hedgehogs, birds and bees at an alarming rate, and with this in mind, individuals should make small changes to allow the birds and the bees to enjoy their outdoor spaces too.

3. Upcycling

For starters, upcycling is a great trend that allows you to repurpose forgotten household items to give them a new lease of life. From used jam jars and old buckets, to wheelbarrows and pallets; anything can be upcycled into a plant pot or garden accessory – and there are plenty of tutorials to follow online.

4. Start from the bottom

Attention to detail is key. But transforming your outdoor space needn’t be extravagant. Something as simple as paying attention to your exterior flooring can be a subtle change to make a big impression. Try using our beautiful clay pavers or colourful mosaic tiles to create unique patios and winding walkways that life the overall appearance of your garden and create a real wow factor.

5. Back to the fuschia

The ’80s was known for its vibrant colours and bold trends, some of which are making a comeback. Don’t be afraid to inject some vibrancy into your flower patch this summer. Plants such as Nemesia and Diascias offer bright petals and sweet scents, whilst lavender will be right on trend this season with its iconic lilac palette. Plus, it’ll be extremely popular with your local pollinators.
